Escaped from slavery, 1824. Went to school with other escaped slaves at Canaan, New Hampshire (U.S.) (school broken up by a mob, 1835). Became preacher and abolition agitator for American Anti-Slavery Society.
Licensed to preach, 1842.
Delivered address before national convention of free people of color at Buffalo urging slaves to rise and slay their masters, 1843. Opposed in that convention by Frederick Douglass.
Urged establishment of a press to promote emancipation. Pastor of Liberty Street Presbyterian Church, Troy, New York, 1843-1848.
Sent as missionary to Jamaica, British West Indies California California, by United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, 1852.
Went on lecture tour through England as president of African Civilization Society, 1861. Chaplain of 20th, 26th, and 31st colored regts. during Civil War. Went to Washington, District of Columbia as pastor of 15th Saint
