John Murray received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine in 1937. In 1938 he graduated from the University of Indiana with the Master of Arts degree. Later Murray studied at the University of California in Los Angeles from which he graduated in 1942 with the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Murray started his professional career working as an editor at the Douglas Aircraft from 1938 to 1945. Then he taught history at the Ohio State University in 1945 and after that at Northwestern University until 1946. He became an assistant professor at the University of Indiana in 1946 and worked in this capacity until 1954. After moving to the state of Iowa, Murray became a chairman of the history department in Coe College in 1954 and served there as a professor of history until his death in 1993.
He was also a visiting associate professor at the University of California in Los Angeles during the summer of 1949. Murray spent around 10 years working as a historian at the Iowa Light and Power Company from 1980 to 1993.
