Career
Bennouna became a professor at Mohamed V University, in his native Morocco, in 1973. He taught there until 1984, including a period as the Dean of the local Law School. The list of institutions in which he has lectured includes the universities of Tunis, Algiers, Nice, New York, Thessaloniki and Paris.As with other judges at the International Court of Justice, Bennouna presents a wide experience in the diplomatic career. He was Director-General of the Arab World Institute [Institut du Monde Arabe] (1991-1998) and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations (2001-2006), as well as chairman of the Sixth Committee (Legal Matters) during the Fifty-ninth Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (2004-2005) and a member of the International Law Commission, in Geneva (1987-1998), being its Special Rapporteur for the question of diplomatic protection from 1997 to 1998. In addition, he joined the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in 1998, retaining his post as a judge until 2001. His election to the International Court of Justice occurred in 2006 (with 158 votes out of a total of 189 valid ballots). Author of numerous books, essays and articles on international law.
