Caen received his education at Sacramento Junior College in 1934.
Caen started his career as a daily newspaper columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle in 1936 and worked there till 1950. In 1950 he went to San Francisco Examiner and worked there till 1958 as a columnist. In 1958 he returned to San Francisco Chronicle and worked there till 1997. Caen also gained renown for his articles as the “voice and conscience of his city”.
Served from private to captain United States Army Air Force, 1942-1945. Member of California Tennis.
Herbert Caen married Bea Matthews in 1942 and divorced in 1948. His next wife was Sally Gilbert, whom he divorced in 1959. In 1963 he married Maria Theresa Shaw, but they divorced in 1982. At last he married Ann Moller in 1996. He has 1 child Christopher and 2 stepchildren: Stephen Moller, Catherine Moller.
