Mr. Tesich was born on September 29, 1942 in Užice, Serbia. He was a son of Radisa and Gospava (Bulaich) Tesich. He immigrated to the USA in 1957 with his family when he was 14 years old. His father died in 1962.

Steve Tesich attended Indiana University until 1965 (his tuition was covered by a wrestling scholarship), majored in Russian literature. There he received his Bachelor of Arts, and then moved on to Columbia University to obtain his master’s in 1967.
Mr. Tesich wrote his first plays while at Columbia University. After graduation, he worked as a Department of Welfare caseworker in Brooklyn, New York in 1968. The first of his dramas, “The Carpenters,” was produced in 1970. During the 1980s he turned largely to writing for films and produced the scripts.
He married Rebecca Fletcher on May 24, 1971.
