(Presidential Courage is a brilliantly readable and inspir...)
Presidential Courage is a brilliantly readable and inspiring saga about crucial times in American history when a courageous President dramatically changed our future. Like Beschloss's previous book, The Conquerors, it was a New York Times bestseller for months. With surprising new sources and a dazzling command of history and human character, Beschloss brings to life those flawed, complex men -- and their wives, families, friends and foes. Never have we had a more intimate, behind-the-scenes view of Presidents coping with the supreme dilemmas of their lives. For Americans who must choose Presidents and assess them once they are elected, Presidential Courage sets a lasting standard by showing us the best in Presidential leadership.

(Taking Charge, edited by Michael R. Beschloss, whom Newsw...)
Taking Charge, edited by Michael R. Beschloss, whom Newsweek has called "America's leading presidential historian," brings you into the room with an American political legend, still hated and revered a quarter century after his death. We hear Lyndon Johnson as he schemes and blusters, rewards and punishes, tells tales of Washington, D.C., and Texas, and reveals a bedrock core of unshakable political beliefs. The only President to record his private conversations from his first day in office, LBJ ordered the tapes to be locked in a vault until at least the year 2023. But now they have been unsealed, providing a close-up look at a President taking power such as we have never had before -- from John F. Kennedy's murder in November 1963 to Johnson's campaign for a landslide victory. Taking Charge is filled with revelations about the full-blooded Texan behind the public image. You will hear LBJ: 1) revealing his self-doubts and personal anguish over the responsibilities of the presidency 2) receiving the frank criticism of his wife, Lady Bird Johnson 3) staking his presidency on a revolutionary civil rights bill 4) scuttling Robert Kennedy's drive to be his Vice President 5) using the Tonkin Gulf attack to expand the American beachhead in Southeast Asia 6) unveiling his private, tortured early doubts that we could ever win a war in Vietnam. An extraordinary audiobook, Taking Charge gives us an unprecidented look into a crucial presidency that continues to shape our lives today. In LBJ's own words, it is history "with the bark off."

(During the three years of J.F. Kennedy's presidency, the ...)
During the three years of J.F. Kennedy's presidency, the world came to the brink of nuclear disaster. Starting with the Bay of Pigs in 1961, the two superpowers moved from crisis to crisis: the summit in Vienna, confrontation over the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy's assassination and the final overthrow of Khrushchev. This book provides a dramatic reassessment of the years 1960 to 1963. The author examines the politics of the era but returns to the two leaders - Kennedy and Khrushchev - and the effects of their actions. Drawing on interviews and newly declassified government documents, the author reveals the mistakes, betrayals, missed communications and covert operations that made these the "crisis years". Michael Bescloss is the author of "Mayday" a nd "Kennedy and Roosevelt".

Reviewed by By Paul H. Kreisberg Summer 1986: This is popular history at its best: accessible and fascinating reading for those who know little about the subject; containing enough new material and insight to command the attention of serious scholars. Beschloss tells the story in concentric rings outward from the personal problems of pilot Francis Gary Powers, to the way foreign policy was conducted in the Eisenhower Administration, to the international context of 1960, and finally to the long-term, mostly unfortunate repercussions of a serious American blunder.
