( “If all pop psychology–self-help books were as sprightl...)
“If all pop psychology–self-help books were as sprightly and insightful as this, they would corner the market. Psychiatrist Skynner and humorist Cleese of Monty Python fame . . . expand the idea of the healthy individual raised in a healthy family becoming a contributor to a healthy society. Particularly relevant is their astute analysis of our society’s attitudes toward directness, money, celebrity, and winning. The authors go on to discuss values, religion, death, and change, all with an ingratiating lack of dogmatism.” —Publishers Weekly What makes people tick? What about families, organizations such as schools and businesses, or societies? By understanding them, can we make them tick better? Where does religion fit in? In this entertaining book, England's odd couple—psychiatrist-scholar Robin Skynner and comic John Cleese—answer these provocative questions and others, as they embark on a fascinating, mind-stretching search for what really matters in life. Cartoons throughout. Media publicity.

(John W. Budd contends that the turbulence of the current ...)
John W. Budd contends that the turbulence of the current workplace and the importance of work for individuals and society make it vitally important that employment be given "a human face." Contradicting the traditional view of the employment relationship as a purely economic transaction, with business wanting efficiency and workers wanting income, Budd argues that equity and voice are equally important objectives. The traditional narrow focus on efficiency must be balanced with employees' entitlement to fair treatment (equity) and the opportunity to have meaningful input into decisions (voice), he says. Only through a greater respect for these human concerns can broadly shared prosperity, respect for human dignity, and equal appreciation for the competing human rights of property and labor be achieved.Budd proposes a fresh set of objectives for modern democracies―efficiency, equity, and voice―and supports this new triad with an intellectual framework for analyzing employment institutions and practices. In the process, he draws on scholarship from industrial relations, law, political science, moral philosophy, theology, psychology, sociology, and economics, and advances debates over free markets, globalization, human rights, and ethics. He applies his framework to important employment-related topics, such as workplace governance, the New Deal industrial relations system, comparative industrial relations, labor union strategies, and globalization. These analyses create a foundation for reforming employment practices, social norms, and public policies. In the book's final chapter, Budd advocates the creation of the field of human resources and industrial relations and explores the wider implications of this renewed conceptualization of industrial relations.

"The face of God" is a potent metaphor, like none other. To see God's face is something more than theoretical, mystical, or conceptional--and to see it, we must look at the face of Jesus. In this innovative book, John Purdy focuses on the face of Jesus and explores twelve Gospel stories beginning with Jesus' birth and moving through his crucifixion and resurrection. Purdy shows us that by looking at Jesus, God's intentions toward us can be discerned.

(In the complex process of becoming a "true human being," ...)
In the complex process of becoming a "true human being," Johnny Pail Face is an unusual guide. Born amid the desperate poverty of a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, he has passed through many worlds, cultures and peoples on a 90-year quest for dignity and self-respect. Along the way, he experienced not one but two genocides. In the first, his Native American people were the victims. In the second, he fought with gun and bayonet alongside fellow Americans against Hitler's war machine and came out the victor. "I don't know which fight wounded me worse," he says. The first genocide left him crazy with anger, the second crazy with despair. It took him two more wars to work things out. In the end, Johnny Pail Face fought in three wars for his country. He lost the ability to love in World War II and did not find it again until two wars later, in the jungles of Vietnam. He also fought alcoholism and won, but lost three wives and two daughters in the decades-long battle. He spent years abroad working for the U. S. military. He learned the languages of the places he lived. He worked the black market on the side. He devoted himself to finding God. He bought a woman in Korea and set her free. He gave his heart to a woman in France and she set him free. In this life-long journey, he learned first to survive, then to prosper, and finally to conquer those forces within and without that kept him from being the understanding and giving human being that he feels it was his destiny to become. His tale offers hope of redemption to those who struggle. A Navajo boy taught to loathe who he was learned how to love who he is. To get from there to here, Pail Face admits that he "did everything for all the wrong reasons." Then he adds with a twinkle in his old eyes: "And it has all turned out just right." John Jarvis teaches English and Native Cultural Studies at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

(The Human Face tells the fascinating story of our most fa...)
The Human Face tells the fascinating story of our most familiar features. We embark on an intriguing and unique journey of self-discovery, exploring the evolutionary, social, and psychological aspects of the face. Why do we have a face? There are six billion human faces and yet we instantly recognize faces that we know. The face is the key to identity, both for ourselves and others. How is it that this small part of us can be such an immediate and effective way to define who we are? Humans have only seven universally recognized facial expressions: anger, fear, happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, and contempt, and yet it is estimated that we can make about 7,000 discreet expressions. How do we read expressions? And how can we hide our true feelings when they are written on our faces without our even knowing? Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? All over the world people seem to agree on which faces are beautiful. What is the relationship between facial beauty and sexual attractiveness? And is our concern with personal appearance just about looking good? Is vanity the result of a harmless need to fit in -- or are there other subconscious motives at work? Why are we so obsessed with the famous faces of actors and entertainers? Is it only a matter of media hype, or are there deeper reasons for our fascination? The Human Face reveals that knowing how the face has developed, what it can do, and what it means, is a way of understanding who we are. Beautifully illustrated with striking photography, this book will give you a new insight into human nature and the naked truth behind your facial features.

( How should Christians conduct themselves in an increasi...)
How should Christians conduct themselves in an increasingly secular society? Jesus answered this troubling question on the eve of His death with some of the most poignant, powerful teaching in His entire ministry. During those hours He taught His apostles and, consequently, all believers throughout history, How To Survive in a World of Unbelievers. Respected pastor, teacher, and author John MacArthur, plumbs the depths of Jesus' final words of encouragement to us, based on John 13-16. By studying this valuable book, you will find answers to these and other difficult questions: • How can you remain pure-hearted and spiritually sound in a church seemingly full of hypocrites? • How do you help your children stay morally pure when they want to "fit in" with school friends who prefer objectionable activites? • How can you keep your family anchored to Christ in a society that is drifting far away from His teaching on family issues, such as divorce, homosexuality and abortion? • How do you retain your Christian ethics when you boss asks you to lie or cheat? • How can you keep your life focused on glorifying Christ in a society that proclaims self, pride, and personal achievement as marks of success?

Poetry. "In an age of information's uprooting of everything, John Curl's SCORCHED BIRTH creates, through a fusion of data and metaphor, a magical poetry that resonates with classical American (Mayan) simultaneity. This is a book of wonders"-Jack Hirschman. "The tensile lines of these poems are a strong loom holding the strength of an interwoven theme of Social Justice making deliberate design through the poet's understanding of actions and attitudes. John Curl show us the undersides of clouds and cultures but also shows immutable order in chaos. He can, in a single poem, give at least 15 ways of changing personal, social, political darkness, including purification by fire. Though some are seemingly surreal, strange and new, your intellect tells you each line is someone's reality at the core"-Mary Rudge, author of Water Planet, from the Foreword.

Fantagraphics' deluxe, full-color library editions of Prince Valiant each feature close to a year's worth of full-page Sunday strips, with this volume collecting strips from 1972-1973, written and roughed-out by Foster and finished by Foster's prodigious assistant, John Cullen Murphy, who took over much of the strip in 1971 and continues with it today.

(BETTER THAN MAGIC -- the prophecies of Daniel. Prophet ...)
BETTER THAN MAGIC -- the prophecies of Daniel. Prophet Daniel was of royalty blood in Israel. He was taken captive to Babylon. But God's was on him. He was a prophet called by the true God in heaven. God told the Prophet Daniel that a time would come when, "The great prince Michael will stand up. Michael is in charge of your people. There will be a time of much trouble, the worst time since nations have been on earth. But Daniel, at that time every one of your people whose name is found written in the book of life will be saved. There are many who are dead and buried. Some of them will wake up and live forever, but others will wake up to shame and disgrace forever. The wise people will shine as bright as the sky. Those who teach others to live right will shine like stars forever and ever. “But you, Daniel, keep this message a secret. You must close the book and keep this secret until the time of the end. Many people will go here and there looking for true knowledge, and the true knowledge will increase.” Then I, Daniel, noticed two other men. One man was standing on my side of the river, and the other was standing on the other side. The man who was dressed in linen was standing over the water in the river. One of the two men said to him, “How long will it be before these amazing things come true?” The man dressed in linen and standing over the water lifted his right and left hands toward heaven. And I heard him make a promise using the name of God who lives forever. He said, “It will be for three and one-half years. The power of the holy people will be broken, and then all these things will finally come true.” I heard the answer, but I really did not understand. So I asked, “Sir, what will happen after all this comes true?” He answered, “Go on about your life Daniel. The message is hidden. It will be a secret until the time of the end. Many people will be made pure—they will make themselves clean. But evil people will continue to be evil. And those wicked people will not understand these things, but the wise people will understand them. “The daily sacrifice will be stopped. There will be 1290 days from that time until the time that the terrible thing that destroys is set up. The one who waits for and comes to the end of the 1335 days will be very happy. “As for you, Daniel, go and live your life until the end. You will get your rest. At the end you will rise from death and receive your share of the promise.” Everyone has heard about Daniel in the lion's den. Or at least they should have. But Daniel was so much more. Daniel had powerful things to say about the future which has not come to pass yet. We need to all know what the Bible has to say about the end of this age. It is in God's Word for us to search out. Daniel predicted the day that Jesus would offer himself to the Jews as their king, but they did not recognize their day of his visitation. Two thousand years has passed since then. Knowing the future is a job that belongs to God alone. But he revealed these truths to special holy men, like Daniel. Now Bible students are searching it out. This is an introduction for people who have never studied this before. This is a chapter by chapter look at the Book of Daniel. The story starts with Daniel and his three friends being taken as captives to Babylon. The book has amazing stories that cover several years of the life of Daniel, He was an old man at the end. The verses included are from the KJV. Acclaims for Verna's books: “Excellent!!! I just LOVE consistent writers....a little jealous also, but that's O.K., I'm still celebrating your work. Be yourself, continue your earnest work, and may a monument of success come to you. The Lord Bless.”—SoCalNovelist “Two thumbs up! The book was wonderful and definitely earned a positive review! I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.”—Jennifer, reviewer for Happily ever after books! “Wonderful book! Wishing you all the best.”--Tamara

The book aims to answer questions both psychologically and sociologically about why the world is the way it is and how this affects individuals. The narrative takes the reader on a journey into hidden consciousness and tries to explain why and how relationships do or do not work. Concepts such as the three parts of the human psyche (Id, ego and super-ego) are explored.
