John Rigby Hale was born on September 17, 1923, in Ashford, Kent, England. He was the son of Hilda (Birks) Hale.
Hale was educated at Jesus College, in Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, in 1948, and a Master of Arts, in 1953. From 1948 to 1949, he also attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University.
Hale's first book, England and the Italian Renaissance: The Growth of Interest in its History and Art, was published in 1954, while he was teaching at Oxford. That same year he also completed Napoleon: The Story of His Life. Hale left Oxford in the late 1950s for visiting-teacher positions at Cornell University and I Tatti, connected to Harvard University. He joined the faculty at the University of Warwick as a history professor in 1964 but left to teach Italian at University College at the University of London in 1970. Hale stayed on the staff at University College, serving as chair of the Italian department and then with a personal chair. His book The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance had just been completed when he suffered a stroke in 1992. The stroke left him unable to speak or write.

1965John Hale was a trustee of the National Gallery, serving as chairman of the group for many years. He also was a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
Hale married his first wife, Rosalind Williams, in 1953. The couple had one son and two daughters. He married his second wife, Sheila Haynes, in 1965. They had one son.
