Early life and education
He received his Master"s degree of Divinity from Kenrick School of Theology in 1987. Auxiliary Bishop Rice was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop J. Terry Steib, SVD, who was then an Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis and who later became the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Memphis, Tennessee. Priestly Ordination and ministry
Rice was ordained to the priesthood on January 3, 1987, by the late Archbishop of Saint Louis John L. May, who died a few years later of a brain tumor.
He taught at Saint Mary"s High School in Saint Louis from 1991 until he became assistant director of Cardinal Glennon College in 1995.
He then ascended to director of the college in 1996 and continued in that capacity until 2000. In that year, he received an assignment as pastor of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Saint Louis.
Then in 2008, he stepped down as pastor to become Director of the Office of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. On July 2, 2008, he was appointed as a Chaplain of His Holiness with the title, Monsignor.
He was still serving as Director of Vocations when he received the appointment as Auxiliary Bishop-Designate, and he continued in that position until the end of the 2010-2011 academic year, when he was appointed to serve again as director of Cardinal Glennon College starting for the 2011-2012 academic year.
He continued in that role for the first semester of the 2012-2013 academic year while training his successor, Review David Skillman, to take over as director of Cardinal Glennon College starting second semester. Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis
On December 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI designated the Edward M. Rice to become Auxiliary Bishop-elect of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Titular Bishop of Sufes.
He succeeded the retiring Saint Louis Auxiliary Bishop Robert Joseph Hermann, 76, whose resignation was accepted that same day by Pope Benedict upon his having reached the age of 75 in August 2009.
Auxiliary Bishop Rice"s episcopal consecration took place on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Robert James Carlson, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Saint Louis, was the principal consecrator.
Bishops John R. Gaydos (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri) and Richard F. Stika (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee), were the principal co-consecrators. Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura (the Vatican"s highest court) and Archbishop Emeritus of Saint Louis, and Rice"s predecessor, the retiring Auxiliary Bishop Hermann, were also in attendance.
Beginning in January 2013, Bishop Rice returned to serving primarily as Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Louis and resides at Holy Redeemer Parish in Webster Groves.
