Dhanin Chearavanont is Thailand's richest individual, with an accumulated wealth of US$ 7.4 bln, which places him among the world’s 200 richest men. He joined Charoen Pokphand Group in 1964, served as president in 1970, and appointed being the Chairman of the group in 1989. Under his leadership the company involves over 100,000 employees and can be found in over 20 countries and regions with the annual sales volume more than $10,000,000,000.
Education
In his childhood years, Mr. Dhanin began his study at a Chinese school in Bangkok before attending Sarasit Wittaya School in Banpong district, Ratchaburi Province. In 1952, he left for mainland China to study high school where afterwards he travelled to Hong Kong to pursue his undergraduate study. Soon after he graduated from college in Hong Kong, Mr. Dhanin returned to Thailand in 1958, to help his family business.
Career
Dhanin joined the group when he was about 25. He became its president in 1970 and chairman 19 years later. Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont used to serve as consultant of the Royal Thai Government and the Parliament Committee on Agriculture, consultant of Dean of Thai State Department, consultant of minister of Foreign Ministry on Economics, consultant of minister of Finance Ministry, congressman of National Legislative Assembly, congressman of House of Lords, vice-president of National Economic and Legal Adjustment Union. Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont has appointed as the vice-president of Thai-Chinese Friendship Association, member of the Hong Kong Reunification of the Preparatory Committee. In view of Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont’s great achievements and contributions, Shenyang City, Fuzhou City, Ningbo City, Shantou City and Chenghu City has awarded him Honorary Citizen. Shanghai City, Wuhan City and Shaanxi province invited Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont as government advisor.

To Mr Dhanin, who is a Buddhist, there is an even deeper thought here. He believes companies are like living beings: they follow a cycle of birth, growth, decay and death. “We cannot keep the business in the family forever,” he says, smiling. “So if you know that, why not prepare?”

He displays a flexible attitude to patriotism. At home, the family speak their ancestral dialect, and there are those who claim that Mr Dhanin's Mandarin sounds better than his Chinese-accented Thai. He has certainly never tried to hide his roots.
Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, one of the world's largest producers of animal feed and livestock, got its start in Bangkok's Chinatown. In 1921 brothers Chia Ek Chor and Choncharoen Chiaravanont opened their first shop supplying seeds imported from China to Thai farmers. Today the group is led by Chia Ek Chor's son Dhanin and the clan fortune shared with his 3 brothers and other relatives. His 3 sons, all active, are expected to succeed Dhanin. Soopakij is vice chairman of CP Group and overlooks the Group's Chinese operations and investment business; Suphachai, also CP Group vice chairman, is president and CEO of True Corp., Thailand's third-largest telecom operator; and Narong is vice chairman of CP Lotus Corp. Dhanin's first cousin, Kiat Chiaravanont, also has a stake in the business.
