- Achievements include a patent for a dolomitic activated carbon filter that uses microbial competition to prevent colonization of the water filter by harmful microbes. The discovery that dental handpieces and their attachments could still transmit hepatitis and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome viruses after treatment with germicides, prompting upgrading of sterilization guidelines. Development of theory that natural microbial processes, such as nutrient cycling, carbon fixation, and greenhouse gas production depend on interactions between quiescent and active microbial populations to maintain system-level stability.
