    • Born in Los Angeles (Dec 30, 1944), grew up in Arcadia, CA (near Los Angeles). Earned Eagle Scout award with gold and silver palms (36 merit badges) while in grammar school. High school from 1958-61 at Woodside Priory HS in Portola Valley, CA and one year and graduated from Paradise HS in 1962. Graduated from Calif State Univ, Chico. Won 1968 natonal AAU Pentathlon Championships (won again in 1978) and was world list sprinter during 1960s with best of 9.4 100 yards (10.2 100 meters) and 45.9 400 meters (on dirt tracks). Graduate school PhD programs at UCLA and Univ of Hawaii.

      Professor or Philosophy and head track coach at the Univ of Hawaii. Also a U.S. team coach and lead competition official at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Retire coaching 1986 due to severe automobile accident and two subsequent multiple level cervical surgeries. Leave of absence from 1986-1989, back to school for PhD in statistics (1988). Retired from teaching due to deterioration in spine resulting from injuries and surgeries. State of Hawaii disability retirement 1990. Appointed an adjunct profesor of statistics at Arizona State University in 1992, a position I still hold I was able to hold various consulting positions throughout the 1990s until my condition worsened so much that by 2000 I was awarded total social security disability. I have written a number of books on statistical modeling (18 as of end of 2015) and taught on-line courses on statistical modeling until 2015. Elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2007) and of the international Statistical Institute (2007). Solar System Ambassador for NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 2007 to present. President of the International Astrostatistics Association (2012-2015). Awarded the Distinguished Alumnus award from California State University, Chico in 2009, two years after being inducted into the Calif State Univ, Chico Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Inducted into the Athletic Halls of Fame at both of my High Schools.

      Three level heart block on Aug 30, 2014, pacemaker implanted Aug 31. Severe degenerative disk disease. 16 books authored on statistical modeling since 2007,plus some 200 journal articles, encyclopedia entries and published statistical software. Won the 2015 PROSE honorable mention award for the second best book published in 2014 in mathematics, for book, "Modeling Count Data" (Cambridge University Press). Several of the books are the most cited and best selling books in their areas of statistics.

      Married Cheryl Swisher in 1984, two children and two adopted children. Four grandchildren.
