In 1936 Zalman graduated from Moscow Geological Prospecting University (nowadays Russian State Geological Prospecting University named after Sergo Ordzhonikidzе.
Since 1937 Z. Gorelik worked as an Engineer, Chief engineer, Head at Belarus Geological administration. From 1941-1944 he held a position of the Chief at Gorky Geological administration, Russian Federation. From 1944-1950 he worked as a Head and the Principal geologist at Belarusian geological administration and also a Teacher of the Geology department at Belarus State University from 1949 to 1955.
Zalman Gorelik served as a Chief geologist at Belarusian Institute of Industrial Design from 1950-1955. Since 1955 he was an Associate professor at the same university. Since 1957 he worked as a Head of oil and gas department at the Institute of Geological Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Belarus. From 1967-1976 Z. Gorelik held a position of a Deputy of tektonist section. Since 1976 Z. Gorelik worked as a Senior researcher at the Belarusian Research Geological Exploration Institute. He was a Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, 1973.
Zalman was married to Maria Shegelman.
