From 1913 to 1916 was a commercial apprentice
Erhard was a commercial apprentice from 1913 to 1916. He joined the German forces during World War I 1916 as an artilleryman. Erhard began to study economics, first in Nuremberg, later in Frankfurt am Main. He received his PhDfrom Franz Oppenheimer in 1925.
In 1948 he was elected Director of Economics by the Bizonal Economic Council.
After the resignation of Adenauer in 1963, Erhard was elected Chancellor.In 1965, he was re-elected. From 1966 to 1967, he also headed the Christian Democratic Union as de facto chairman.
Erhard's financial and economic policies proved widely popular as the German economy made a "miracle" recovery to rapid growth and widespread prosperity in the 1950s, overcoming wartime destruction and successfully integrating millions of refugees from the east.
