(A new generation of young stars who idolized these men ar...)
A new generation of young stars who idolized these men are making their way onto the big stage. They are ready to become the fan favorites who will carry the game for the next generation.
Alexander Ovechkin is a Russian ice hockey player. He competed for the HC Dynamo before being drafted into the NHL's Washington Capitals in 2005. As a left-winger and later captain of the team, he led it to its first victory at the Stanley Cup championship. A three-time world champion and three-time recipient of the Hart Memorial Trophy, Ovechkin is one of the most valuable players and the greatest goal scorers in the history of the league.
Background
Ethnicity:
Alexander's father is of Slavic ancestry, while his mother has Mordovian roots.
Alexander Ovechkin, in full Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, was born on September 17, 1985, in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (present-day Russian Federation). He is the youngest son of Mikhail Ovechkin, a soccer player, and Tatyana Ovechkina, a two-time Olympic champion in basketball (gold). Ovechkin has two elder brothers, Sergei and Mikhail.
Education
Alexander Ovechkin revealed his interest in hockey at an early age. An active and curious child, Alexander never missed a hockey game aired on TV. Though Ovechkin's parents were against their son's passion believing the sport was too traumatic, he was enrolled at a hockey section by his elder brother Sergei at the age of eight. It was Sergei who encouraged his little brother to pursue hockey even when the parents had no time to bring him to training because of their own eventful athletic career.
A secondary school that Ovechkin attended while living in the suburbs of Moscow was infamous for its strict discipline. Hockey was a kind of outlet for him, he trained hard day and night. Ovechkin was invited to the Dynamo Moscow hockey school after finishing eight and a half grades. Although the youngest player in all junior teams, he always showed excellent results. At the 1996 Moscow championship, he scored 56 goals and that was three times more than Pavel Bure's record.
Career
The start of Alexander Ovechkin's career can be counted from 2001 when he began to play at the highest level of Russian professional hockey, in the Russian Superleague, for Dynamo Moscow. By age 17, he became an outstanding forward for the national junior hockey team. Ovechkin led the national squad to victory at the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championship scoring 6 goals.
The athlete's childish dream of becoming an NHL player came true in 2004 when he was selected by the Washington Capitals with the first overall pick of the NHL draft. The labor lockout that provoked the cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL season postponed his first year with the Capitals for a year. Playing for his initial team, Dynamo, during that season, Ovechkin reached 27 points in 37 games. At the 2005 World Junior Championship, he injured his shoulder that made him miss two months of play.
That same year, Alexander Ovechkin finally debuted in the National Hockey League alongside another famed rookie, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He surpassed Crosby with a total of 106 points that brought him the Calder Memorial Trophy as for a rookie of the 2005-2006 season.
Although Ovechkin appeared in an ice hockey rink as the NHL All-Star selection the next season, his growing level of play didn't secure the triumph for the Capitals which ended up last in their division for the second time in his two years with the team. The athlete overcorrected and led the team to a division title in the 2007-2008 season scoring 65 goals. The loss of the Capitals in their first-round playoff series didn't disturb Ovechkin to pick up his first Hart Memorial Trophy at the season's end. That same season, his contract with the Capitals was prolonged from three to 13 years.
The Washington Capitals gained another division title in the 2008-09 season but were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the conference semifinal. A leader of the NHL in goals scored, Ovechkin was given his next Hart Memorial Trophy, second in a row. In 2010, Alexander Ovechkin was assigned the captain of the Capitals. The next two seasons were characterized by the score decline, with only 32 and 38 goals, respectively.
In the first half of the 2012-13 season shortened by the lockout, Ovechkin came back to the Kontinental Hockey League where he played for Dynamo Moscow. Although the beginning of the 2012-13 season wasn't promising, the Great Eight recaptured the NHL leading position with 32 goals during the remainder of the season. The third Hart Trophy was received.
Ovechkin again led the NHL in goals scored (51) during the 2013-14 season, but the Capitals' playoff streak ended at six seasons during that campaign. In 2014-15 he scored a league-high 53 goals and led the Capitals to the postseason, where Washington lost a thrilling second-round series (despite having held a three-games-to-one lead) that saw each of the seven games decided by one goal.
In November 2015, Ovechkin became the league's top-scoring player born in Russia with his 484th career goal. Having a total of 50 goals at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, Ovechkin provided the Capitals with a franchise-record 56 wins. Unfortunately, the squad couldn't capitalize on its top seed in the playoffs and was again eliminated in the second round. The 2016-17 season seemed to be the least productive in Ovechkin's career as the player reached only 69 points (33 goals, 36 assists). The Capitals, however, set up another best regular-season record in the league. Though, they lost to a lower-seeded team in the second round of the postseason.
The next season was iconic for both Ovechkin and the Capitals. Ovechkin, again the leader in goals scored (49) and the Capitals, again the holder of division title, appeared in the Stanley Cup finals. The team triumphed at the tournament taking over the Vegas Golden Knights. The postseason wasn't less rich in achievements for Ovechkin who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. Alexander the Great scored a league-leading 51 goals during the 2018-19 season, and the Capitals won a fourth consecutive division title. However, in the following postseason, the team was again defeated in the opening round.
Assigned the captain of the 2019 National Hockey League All-Star Game, Alexander Ovechkin preferred to miss the play to have a rest that led to his disqualification for one game. The situation was repeated once again the following year. On February 22, 2020, Ovechkin had his 700th career goal. Later at the end of May, he shared the Rocket Richard Trophy with David Pastrňák of the Boston Bruins, both scored 48 goals in the concluded regular season the postponed part of which was moved to the postseason.
An outstanding athlete, Ovechkin was assigned an ambassador for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. A year earlier, he set up a line of designer streetwear along with CCM. The legendary winger has also tried his hand at acting, appearing in NHL: Just Like Me, Boys to the Bigs, both of 2008, and a 2010 Russian comedy.
Alexander Ovechkin is one of the most eminent hockey players in the history of the National Hockey League. A three-time World Champion, Russian Superleague Champion, Gagarin Cup Champion, and Honored Master of Sports of Russia, he is the first Russian captain to lead a team (Washington Capitals) to the victory at the NHL's Stanley Cup.
Many records set by Alexander Ovechkin during his athletic career, such as a nine-time NHL's leading goal scorer and a seven-time NHL All-Star Game participant, have provided him with a great number of awards and trophies, including the Hart Memorial Trophy, Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (most wins in the history), Ted Lindsay Award, and ESPY Award for the Best Male Athlete (first NHL player to have the award), among others. The first Hart Memorial Trophy of Ovechkin, as the league Most Valuable Player for the 2007-08 season, was complemented by the key to the city of Washington. By the way, Ovechkin is the first Washington MVP winner in a major sport since Joe Theismann in 1983.
The Great Eight was named to the NHL All-Star Team eight times, including 6 straight times since 2015. He is the only player in history to be assigned, though by a voting error, to both all-star teams in one season (as a left and right winger accordingly). In 2017, Ovechkin was featured among the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all-time and was included in the list of the 25 top players in the league's history according to TSN.
In 2009, a Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin named an asteroid 257261 after the great hockey player. A double-decker sightseeing bus in Washington, D.C. was also named after Ovechkin by the Ride of Fame series of mobile monuments.

Politics
Alexander Ovechkin established an informal patriotic movement PutinTeam in November 2017. Although the athlete denied the political nature of the group claiming that it was created only to celebrate his home country, the movement supported Vladimir Putin during the 2018 presidential campaign. Several Russian media, however, stated that a Kremlin-supported public relations firm, IMA-Consulting, yet had been relevant to the formation of the PutinTeam. The Kremlin, in its turn, spoke in favor of the movement after it was created.
The Washington Post once took a guess that Ovechkin maintained personal relations with Putin who sent a gift on the occasion of the athlete's wedding in 2016. Ovechkin himself responded that the main topic of their discussions with the Russian politician was a hockey game.
