Eugen Slutsky (Eugen Slutsky)

Evgeny "Eugen" Evgenievich Slutsky was a Russian/Soviet mathematical statistician, economist and political economist.

Background

  • SLUTSKY, Eugen was born in 1880 in Yaroslavl, Russia.

  • Education

    • Eugen awarded gold medal by the gymnasium

Eugen was expelled from University of Kiev in 1901 for his political activity. He took part in student unrest in the university.

He was forbidded to study in any Russian University. So he went to Munich. In Munich he seriosly started to study Ricardo, Marx, Lenin and he already had outlined a plan of work for the applicationof mathematics to economics. In 1905 he managed to enroll Kiev University due to Russian Revolution. He graduated from Kiev University with Gold Medal in 1911.

    Career

    • It was the work of the Lausanne School in economics that attracted him and yielded up his first economics paper in 1915. In his 1915 paper, he presented the Slutsky decomposition of demand functions into substitution and income effects (i.e., the Slutsky Equation). His other prominent contribution to economics came in 1927, when he showed that a series of shocks can be summed up to yield regular cyclical properties. This paper alongside Frisch's work began the shock-dependent business cycle that precedes the New Classical theory of today. The famous Slutsky-Yule theorem was also laid out in that paper. Most of his other work concentrated in statistics and probability theory. In 1925 he introduced the famous Slutsky Theorem.

    Major achievements

    • He presented the Slutsky decomposition of demand functions into substitution and income effects
    • In 1925 he introduced the famous Slutsky Theorem.
    • In 1927 he showed that a series of shocks can be summed up to yield regular cyclical properties
    • In 1927 also introduced the famous Slutsky-Yule theorem

    Works

    Politics

In his youth, he had taken part in student protests against Czarist policies; expelled twice from the University of Kiev and barred from attending university anywhere within the Russian Empire, he was forced to leave the country to continue his education.

Politically he was not a member of any particular party and his character was reserved and secretive
