His diploma thesis was dedicated to the works of Hungarian philosopher Agnes Heller, a representative of the “ Budapest school”, famous for her dissenting communist views, which attracted interest also in Italy, especially in the 70’s.

In 1985, after Rossi had started brief journalistic activity as an editor of the local newspaper Il Tirreno, he decided to devote himself full time to politics; he got the position of assessor and vice-mayor in the Municipality of Pontedera.
Since 1990 till 1999 he has been the mayor of Pontedera, over the years during which the municipal administration of Pontedera had a confrontation of defense issues, touching the development and the future of the territory and its community.
In 1999 he has worked in the department of the economic politics of the Democrats of the Left as a National Secretary.
At the local conference on April 16, 2000 he was presented in the list of the Democrats of the Left and was elected in the constituency of Pisa and got the position of assessor in the field of Healthcare.
Since April 2004 till June 2005 he was on Board of directors for the Aifa, italian drug Agency. He resigned when, in June 2005, he was appointed a Coordinator of the health Commission for the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, a role which he still holds.
On February 20, 2005 due to the choice of candidates of the Democrats of the Left, Enrico Rossi became the most voted candidate throughout the region and has been reconfirmed as an assessor in the field of Healthcare.
He has a teenage son.
