Wen Yiduo was a famous poet, scholar and fighter for freedom and democracy in modern China. His knowledge covered both the East and the W. He was also well versed in both ancient and modern learning.
Wen Yiduo made enormous contributions in his researches into classical Chinese literature and culture. As a pairiotic fighter concerned for democracy and freedom in China, Wen Yiduo inspired numerous Chinese to fight for their freedom.
Education
Received a traditional education at school.
During the study at the Tsingua University Wen Yiduo served as editor for several publications and published many pieces of classical poetry.
During tthe time of studying at the Art Institute of Chicago his first collection of poetry, Hongzhu ("Red Candle"), was published.
Career
During studying in the Tsinghua University Wen Yiduo published his first poem "Western Shore" (July 1920).
In the USA he published his first collection of the poems "Red Candle" (September 1923).
In 1927 participated in the Crescent Moon Society and became the editor for its journal.
His second collection of poetry, "Dead Water", was published in January 1928.
Wen Yiduo became a pivotal figure in the history of Chinese leterature with his two collections of poetry and his propositions for new poetry. He was a represantative of the new metrical poetry, which was one of the main streams of poetry in China after the May Fourth Movement.
Politics
Wen Yiduo was very active during the May Fourth Movement. He participated in propaganda, parades and strikes and helped to rescue captured students.
Wen Yiduo was exposed to Marxosm while teaching at the Southwest Associated University. In 1944 he participated in the southwestern cultural conference, after which he joined the China Democratic League. From that point on, he spearheaded a series of social and political activities as a professor of democracy and as a leader of the Yunnan arm and of the China Democratic League.
In 1946 the death of Li Gongpu prompted Wen Yiduo ti openly challenge the government at Li's memorial ceremony. His outspoken nature led to his own assassination by secret agents soon after the funeral.
