Background
AZUELA, Mariano was born on January 1, 1873 in Lagos, Jal., Mexico. Azuela completed his education in 1899 with a degree in medicine from the University of Guadalajara, but had early demonstrated an active interest in both literature and politics. In 1896 he began writing newspaper articles and sketches and at the same time identified himself with student agitation against the regime of Porfirio Díaz.Diaz. His education finished, Azuela returned to his native town to combine the practice of medicine with a career of intense literary production. By the time of the revolution of 1910, Azuela had published three novels treating of social corruption, but he had received no public recognition.
