He served in the Franco-Prussian War, entered Paris at the head of the first unit of the conquerors.
Bernhardi headed the military history department of the General Staff in Berlin.
In 1909 he retired to write on military subjects, and in 1912 published Deutschland und der nächstenachste Krieg ("Germany and the Next War"). Recalled to active duty in World War I, Bernhardi commanded an army corps in 1915 on the eastern front, and in 1918 fought at Armentières,Armentieres, in France.
