Honorary Member of Netherlands Society of Arts, Science, and Literature. In early life engaged in private teaching. Afterwards (till 1884) employed as commercial clerk and foreign correspondent at Sheffield.
Removed to London, 18S4. Contributor to the Academy, Atheraeum, etc. Temporary editor of Academy, 1884-1885.
President, Philological Society, 1891-1893, 1900-1903 and 1909-1910. Fellow of the British Academy, 1907. Joint-editor of the Oxford English Dictionary since 1889.
