She was born Beatrice Stella Tanner in London on Feb. 9, 1865. She was married twice, in 1884 to Patrick Campbell, who died in 1900, and in 1914 to George W.
Her appearance in 1893, under Pinero's direction in the leading role of his then revolutionary play, The Second Mrs. Tanqueray, put her immediately into the forefront among English actresses. She is remembered along Broadway as the tempermental star of Shaw's Pygmalion, whose manager, A. H. Woods, once carpeted the street in front of the Selwyn Theatre with tanbark to quiet the street noises while she was playing. In her later days she made a cult of rudeness, and she may be remembered as much for her excessively frank mots as for her acting talent, which dimmed as she grew older.
