(The Good Soldier Schweik is the story beginning in Prague...)
The Good Soldier Schweik is the story beginning in Prague with news of the assassination in Sarajevo that precipitates World War I. Schweik displays such enthusiasm about faithfully serving the Austrian Emperor in battle that no one can decide whether he is merely an imbecile or is craftily undermining the war effort. However, he is arrested by a member of the secret police after making some politically sensitive remarks, and is sent to prison. After being certified insane he is finally transferred to a madhouse, before being ejected. This is the Czech classic of anti-war satirical humor.

Jaroslav Hasek was born on April 30, 1883 in Prague, Czech Republic.
His life was irregular. At one time Jaroslav Hašek sold mongrel dogs with forged pedigrees. He wrote for various newspapers and, using different pseudonyms, even carried on humorous polemics with himself. During World War I Hašek served in the Austrian army but deserted to the Russians.
After the revolution of 1917 Jaroslav Hašek joined the Bolshevik Party in Russia and served for two years in Siberia as a Soviet commissar. He returned to Prague in 1920 to publish The Good Soldier Schweik.
Poor health, aggravated by drink, brought his early death on Jan. 3, 1923, in Lipnik, Bohemia, and he never completed the work. The projected four volumes were completed by the humorist Karel Vanek.

On May 23, 1910, he married Jarmila Mayerová. The marriage proved an unhappy one and lasted little more than a year. Mayerová went back to live with her parents in 1911 after he was caught trying to fake his own death. In 1920 he remarried (although still married to Jarmila).
