He sought to recapture the spirit of medieval England through reconstructions of her Gothic churches; these compositions are imaginary in the main, but highly convincing in structure and textures. Griggs's contemplative, mystical mood and his etching technique reveal the influence of Samuel Palmer. He is one of the most important etchers of architecture. Splendid examples of his work are Anglia Perdita (1921), St. Botolph's, Boston (1924), The Almonry (1925), Sarras (1926), and Tattershall (1930).
