Mariko Mori mixes elements of Japanese culture and religion with motifs from Eastern and Western art history, layering props from popular fashion, design, music, science fiction, and comics. She moves at the frontier between reality and Utopia, bearing witness to experiences of transformation and transcendence and creating a supernatural world of her own.
Self-portraits as cyber-beings
In her early photographs and video works, Mori herself was the principal protagonist, appearing in fantastical, bizarre outfits. She popped up as an alien, futuristic being in silver high-tech overalls in the busy streets of mega-city Tokyo, as a synthetic mermaid in the world's largest indoor waterpark, the Seagaia Ocean Dome in Japan, and floated from place to place in a transparent capsule like a time traveler. A team of employees supports her in realizing her perfectly staged and processed images, assisting with the designs, costumes, makeup, and hair; handling lighting, cameras, sound, and engineering; and with computer animation and design.
