Education

Studied at private school; Glasgow University; graduated with highest honours in Medicine, 1878.

Career

President University Medical Society and Resident Surgeon Western Infirmary, 1879. Entered I.M.S. 1880; Professor of Chemistry and Pathology, Medical College, Calcutta, for six years; Sanitary Commissioner for ten years camping over the ancient “ Holy Land ” of Buddhism, where he discovered many important sites.

Has travelled in Burma, China, Japan, North America, and the Himalayas and Tibet; served Burmali, 1886-S7 (medal with clasp); Chitral Relief Force, 1895 (medal with clasp); China, including Relief of Peking, 1900 (despatches, Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire, and medal with clasp); Mahsud-Waziri Blockade, 1901-1902 (clasp).

Principal Medical Officer Malakand, 1902; Principal Medical Officer Tibet Mission to Lhasa, 1903-1904 (despatches, Companion of the Bath, medal with clasp).

Honorary of Glasgow University, 1895; PL.S., F.R.A.I., I.M.S.
