1919 graduate officer training courses in Kiev. 1921 graduate Higher Infantry School.
From 1918 volunteer in the Red Army. From 1921 regt commander. 1924 demobilized from army in consequence of a wound.
1925 began lit work; on the basis of his novelette Timur i yego komanda (Timur and His Crew) (1940) originated the “Timurovtsy,” mass children's movement, whose aim was to help the families of front soldiers. On his works were based numerous plays and films: Slikola muzhestva (School of Courage), Chuk i Gek (Chuk and Gek), MaTchish Kibal'chish, Sud’ba barabanshchika (The Drummer’s Fate), et cetera From start of World War 2 military correspondent, newspaper Communist Youth League’skaya pravda.
Late 1941 stayed behind enemy lines as machine-gunner in a partisan detachment.
