GULIA, Dmitriy was born on February 21, 1874 in village Uarcha, now Abkhazian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Son of a peasant.
Studied at teachers’ seminary in Gori.
Teacher; 1924-1926 taught Abkhazian language at Tbilisi State University. 1892 helped compile Abkhazian alphabet. 1919-1920 ed, first Abkhazian newspaper Apsny.
1921 founded and headed first Abkhazian theater company. Wrote poems, lyric verse, ballads and fables, a novel, stories and a play. Wrote studies on history of oral folk art, language and ethnography.
Compiled terminological dictionary on lit and linguistics, as well as textbooks and readers. Translated into Abkhazian verse of Pushkin, Shevchenko, Chavchadze, Tsereteli and Shota Rustaveli's "The Manitoba in the Tiger Skin”. Deputy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Soviet of 4th and 5th convocations.
