1897 joined revol movement. 1898 helped to organize Moscow League for the Liberation of the Working Class. From 1900 worked in Voronezh and maintained contacts with Northern Workers’ League.
Head, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Central Committee Eastern Bureau, Samara. From late 1903 head, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Central Committee, Southern Bureau, Kiev. July 1904 coopted to Central Committee, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party.
From 1905 worked in Moscow. Helped to organize distribution of newspaper “Vperyod”. August 1906-May 1907 secretary, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Credentials Commission.
Frequently arrested; 1911-1915 worked in Russian rosin and terpentine industry as a chemical engineering 1915-1917 director, Bondyuzhskiy Chemical Plant and Bolshevik group leader. From February 1918 Presidium member and head, Chemical Department, Supreme Economic Council.
Company-founder, Centr Chemical Laboratory (now the Karpov Physiochemical Research Institute).
