Malyutin studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (1883-1886) under the supervision of V.Y. Makovskiy, I.M. Pryanishnikov, and Y.S. Sorokin. Finished accountancy courses in Moscow (the beginning of the 1870s).
After finishing accountancy courses in Moscow, Malyutin became an office clerk in Voronezh. After visiting the third exhibition of the Society of Itinerant Art Exhibitions, which took place in Voronezh in 1874, he finally made up his mind to become an artist.
Sergey Malyutin started participating in exhibitions since 1890. He mostly worked with genre art and portrait. He also worked in the sphere of book illustration, scenography, applied and decorative arts.
In 1922, Malyutin became a founder member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. In 1923, he was planning to organize workshops of «art industry» at Voronezh State University.
