1909 graduate Faculty of Oriental Languages, Saint St. Petersburg University.
191 I toured Western Mongolia to collect linguistic, folkloristic and ethnographic material. 1912 sent for further studies to Paris and London. While in Paris compiled a catalog of Mongolian books and manuscripts in the National Library and attended lectures by leading French Orientalists.
While in London did research at British Museum. After completion of studies in Western Europe spent over two years in Mongolia recording epic literature Kept detailed journals which were subsequently lost.
Also evaluated the collection of Mongolian documents at the Asian Museum, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1929.
