1905 graduate Kazan’ Infantry College.
In his youth worked as laborer and smith. Also studied and passed external examinations for high-school certificate. From 1904 in revol movemant.
Member, Socialist-Revol Party. Served in Russian Army, at first as volunteer. Soon quit army and turned to acting.
1914 redrafted and fought in World War 1. Five times wounded; distinguished himself in battle. 1917 commanded regt as lt-colonel.
1917 sided with Leftist Socialist-Revolutionaries, breaking with them in the summer of 1918. 1 May 1917 relieved of his command for anti-war statements, court-martialed and sentenced to fortress arrest. Delcg at 2nd All-Russian Congress of Soviets.
Member, All-Russian Central Executive Committee. 1918 comissar, All-Russian Main Staff and chairman, Higher Certification Commission to Select Officers for the Red Army. From August 1918 commanded 9th Army which beat off Krasnov's offensive in the Balashov-Novokhopersk-Kamyshin sector.
From December 1918 commanded 10th Army in defense of Tsaritsyn. Sponsored formation of Budyonnyy’s Cavalry Division, then Cavalry Corps. From August 1919 commanded 14th Army on Kiev and Bryansk fronts.
October 1919 appointed commander, Southern Front. January—December 1920 commanded Southwestern Front. After Civil War commanded Kiev and Petrograd Military district, Caucasian Army, Ukraine and Crimean Armed Forces and from 1927 Belorussian Military district.
1925-1926 military attache in China. 1931-1937 Road chief of Red Army General Staff. From 1937 Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics First Deputy People's Commissar of Defense.

The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
