Excerpt from Ludlow Stokesay It does not come within the scope of these little books to indicate authorities; but, for a subject so full of interest as Ludlow and Stokesay, I may mention the following books for the benefit of those general readers who may wish to go more fully into the history of the neighbourhood. It is, of course, only a handful of books out of many. "The History of Ludlow," by Thomas Wright, M.A., F.S.A. (1852). "Ludlow: Town and Neighbourhood," by Oliver Baker(1889). "The Council in the Marches of Wales," by Caroline A. J. Skeel, D. Lit.(1904). "The Welsh Wars of Edward I.," by John E. Morris, M.A.(1901). "The Gild Merchant," by Charles Gross(1890), for ancient burgess constitution and customs of Ludlow. For Ludlow Castle also see Clark's "Mediæval and Military Architecture"; and for Stokesay, Turner's "Domestic Architecture." He held her face upwards with one hand at her chin, as he playfully planted one kiss after another on her plump, little, rosy lips, which from mere coquettish instinct she gathered up for the purpose. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

( Originally published in 1924, this is a delightful expl...)
Originally published in 1924, this is a delightful exploration of north Gloucestershire by way of its many footpaths. The author, the wonderfully named Algernon Gissing, passes through towns and villages, over rivers and across fields, commenting on the history of buildings, recounting conversations with people he meets, and observing animals and birdsong particular to the area. As he reflects on the various villages and landmarks in the area, Gissing paints a picture of this very English landscape. Recounting village life with fondness, he captures the spirit of the county's people and their day-to-day errands. As well as illustrating the heart of the county, Gissing describes the individuality of the places he passes through. From the Stonesfield slates of Guiting to the lonely rolling uplands around Birdlip, he recounts a striking land of contrasts.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated.1894 Excerpt: ... 308 CHAPTER XI. 'NEAR NEEBORS o' THE STARNS.' To the south of the Linnburn stretched wide, undulating ridges of dark heather; the hills to the north were huge, round uplands of smooth grass, intersected by deep sinuous passes through which rills and stony burns babbled. About three miles from the Linnbrig vicarage in this latter direction, on an open terrace with such a bare grassy defile below it, and a steep green shoulder immediately behind, stood the sheep-farm of Whauplandlee. The house was a cold grey building with a roof of brilliant tiles, a clump of battered trees on its north-west side, and a few acres of reclaimed tillage walled in on the east. A month or two ago the spot seemed bleak and desolate enough, but in this first June sunshine, and amidst the quickening sounds and fragrance which the rays had been able to summon, it could present an aspect of life primitive enough, but by no means blank or dreary. Such was at last the vagabond's haven. This negative perception would indeed have appeared something more than inadequate to the one solitary consciousness which alone at that moment was directly engaged with the scene. On the track ascending the wide slope immediately before the house was a sombre figure on horseback, whose eyes were now upon the slackened bridle, now upon the various surroundings illumined by the sunshine, as his steed trudged patiently along, apparently in as deep contemplation as the meditative rider himself. Even the iron footfall was scarcely audible, and afforded but a dull measured accompanimentto the other varieties of silence by which the place was held. A bird-voice would travel fitfully upon the western breeze, the plaint of a lamb would come, and on passing this scattered gorse the bees crooned their laborious sat...

The snow came, and lay some six inches on the hills, drifted to many feet in the gullies, and still promise of more. For a couple of days, however, the low slaty clouds carried their burden over the mountains without anything more than a frown. Those overcharged skies corresponded well with the domestic atmosphere of Bygate during the same time. Everybody about the place seemed preoccupied and over-weighted. Excerpt from A Village Hampden, Vol. 2 of 3 The interior of Giles Radway's cottage was of course a contrast to that of Mrs. Bewglass'. The room where young Wayfer and Joice were sitting was the ordinary living-room of the inmates, and the one in which the weekly singing-class was regularly held. It was a combination of kitchen and sitting-room such as most country cottages afford. The stone floor was uncovered, save for a patch-work hearth-rug before the fender, and the chairs were of plain honest ash. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience. (As Adelina walked into the room, her husband turned round...)
As Adelina walked into the room, her husband turned round to greet her, and with a brighter face than she had expected, came forward to fo her in his arms. He held her face upwards with one hand at her chin, as he playfully planted one kiss after another on her plump, little, rosy lips, which from mere coquettish instinct she gathered up for the purpose. But she was glad when he released her, and Sibbald felt perfectly aware of the fact as he did so. She did not know why his kisses should burn her so, or why she should shrink so vehemently from his VOL. III. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a colour PDF version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Excerpt from The Scholar of Bygate, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale ...)
Excerpt from The Scholar of Bygate, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale The snow came, and lay some six inches on the hills, drifted to many feet in the gullies, and still promise of more. For a couple of days, however, the low slaty clouds carried their burden over the mountains without anything more than a frown. Those overcharged skies corresponded well with the domestic atmosphere of Bygate during the same time. Everybody about the place seemed preoccupied and over-weighted. Gissing was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. His initial education was at Back Lane School in Wakefield, but from 1870 he started attending Lindow Grove School in Cheshire as a boarder, as a result of his father"s death.
He went on to study Law at London University, graduating with an Bachelor of Laws in 1882.
He wrote twenty-five novels, two collections of short stories and several pieces of travel writing. He died from heart disease. He practised as a solicitor in Wakefield for a while, but failed to attract enough clients to sustain his practise.
On 8 September 1887, Gissing married Catherine née Baseley (1859-1937), later moving with her to Broadway, Worcestershire.
Together they had five children. Having been unsuccessful in his legal career, Gissing decided to pursue an interest in writing literature.
During his life, he wrote and published thirty books, but the income from these was negligible. He received a number of grants from the Royal Literary Fund.
In 1924, Gissing"s Cotswold walking guide, The Footpath Way in Gloucestershire was published.
This is one of the first walking guides for the Cotswolds.
