(Because plates and shells are common structural elements ...)
Because plates and shells are common structural elements in aerospace, automotive, and civil engineering structures, engineers must understand the behavior of such structures through the study of theory and analysis. Compiling this information into a single volume, Theory and Analysis of Elastic Plates and Shells, Second Edition presents a complete, up-to-date, and unified treatment of classical and shear deformation plates and shells, from the basic derivation of theories to analytical and numerical solutions. Revised and updated, this second edition incorporates new information in most chapters, along with some rearrangement of topics to improve the clarity of the overall presentation. The book presents new material on the theory and analysis of shells, featuring an additional chapter devoted to the topic. The author also includes new sections that address Castigliano's theorems, axisymmetric buckling of circular plates, the relationships between the solutions of classical and shear deformation theories, and the nonlinear finite element analysis of plates. The book provides many illustrations of theories, formulations, and solution methods, resulting in an easy-to-understand presentation of the topics. Like the previous edition, this book remains a suitable textbook for a course on plates and shells in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering curricula and continues to serve as a reference for industrial and academic structural engineers and scientists.

(A systematic presentation of energy principles and variat...)
A systematic presentation of energy principles and variational methods The increasing use of numerical and computational methods in engineering and applied sciences has shed new light on the importance of energy principles and variational methods. Energy Principles and Variational Methods in Applied Mechanics provides a systematic and practical introduction to the use of energy principles, traditional variational methods, and the finite element method to the solution of engineering problems involving bars, beams, torsion, plane elasticity, and plates. Beginning with a review of the basic equations of mechanics and the concepts of work, energy, and topics from variational calculus, this book presents the virtual work and energy principles, energy methods of solid and structural mechanics, Hamilton’s principle for dynamical systems, and classical variational methods of approximation. A unified approach, more general than that found in most solid mechanics books, is used to introduce the finite element method. Also discussed are applications to beams and plates. Complete with more than 200 illustrations and tables, Energy Principles and Variational Methods in Applied Mechanics, Second Edition is a valuable book for students of aerospace, civil, mechanical, and applied mechanics; and engineers in design and analysis groups in the aircraft, automobile, and civil engineering structures, as well as shipbuilding industries.

(The second edition of An Introduction to Nonlinear Finite...)
The second edition of An Introduction to Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis has the same objective as the first edition, namely, to facilitate an easy and thorough understanding of the details that are involved in the theoretical formulation, finite element model development, and solutions of nonlinear problems. The book offers an easy-to-understand treatment of the subject of nonlinear finite element analysis, which includes element development from mathematical models and numerical evaluation of the underlying physics. The new edition is extensively reorganized and contains substantial amounts of new material. Chapter 1 in the second edition contains a section on applied functional analysis. Chapter 2 on nonlinear continuum mechanics is entirely new. Chapters 3 through 8 in the new edition correspond to Chapter 2 through 8 of the first edition, but with additional explanations, examples, and exercise problems. Material on time dependent problems from Chapter 8 of the first edition is absorbed into Chapters 4 through 8 of the new edition. Chapter 9 is extensively revised and it contains up to date developments in the large deformation analysis of isotropic, composite and functionally graded shells. Chapter 10 of the first edition on material nonlinearity and coupled problems is reorganized in the second edition by moving the material on solid mechanics to Chapter 12 in the new edition and material on coupled problems to the new chapter, Chapter 10, on weak-form Galerkin finite element models of viscous incompressible fluids. Finally, Chapter 11 in the second edition is entirely new and devoted to least-squares finite element models of viscous incompressible fluids. Chapter 12 of the second edition is enlarged to contain finite element models of viscoelastic beams. In general, all of the chapters of the second edition contain additional explanations, detailed example problems, and additional exercise problems. Although all of the programming segments are in Fortran, the logic used in these Fortran programs is transparent and can be used in Matlab or C++ versions of the same. Thus the new edition more than replaces the first edition, and it is hoped that it is acquired by the library of every institution of higher learning as well as serious finite element analysts. The book may be used as a textbook for an advanced course (after a first course) on the finite element method or the first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. A solutions manual is available on request from the publisher to instructors who adopt the book as a textbook for a course. ( As Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational...)
As Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer (CHT) evolve and become increasingly important in standard engineering design and analysis practice, users require a solid understanding of mechanics and numerical methods to make optimal use of available software. The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics, Third Edition illustrates what a user must know to ensure the optimal application of computational procedures—particularly the Finite Element Method (FEM)—to important problems associated with heat conduction, incompressible viscous flows, and convection heat transfer. This book follows the tradition of the bestselling previous editions, noted for their concise explanation and powerful presentation of useful methodology tailored for use in simulating CFD and CHT. The authors update research developments while retaining the previous editions’ key material and popular style in regard to text organization, equation numbering, references, and symbols. This updated third edition features new or extended coverage of: • Coupled problems and parallel processing • Mathematical preliminaries and low-speed compressible flows • Mode superposition methods and a more detailed account of radiation solution methods • Variational multi-scale methods (VMM) and least-squares finite element models (LSFEM) • Application of the finite element method to non-isothermal flows • Formulation of low-speed, compressible flows With its presentation of realistic, applied examples of FEM in thermal and fluid design analysis, this proven masterwork is an invaluable tool for mastering basic methodology, competently using existing simulation software, and developing simpler special-purpose computer codes. It remains one of the very best resources for understanding numerical methods used in the study of fluid mechanics and heat transfer phenomena.

( This introduction to the theory of Sobolev spaces and H...)
This introduction to the theory of Sobolev spaces and Hilbert space methods in partial differential equations is geared toward readers of modest mathematical backgrounds. It offers coherent, accessible demonstrations of the use of these techniques in developing the foundations of the theory of finite element approximations. J. T. Oden is Director of the Institute for Computational Engineering & Sciences (ICES) at the University of Texas at Austin, and J. N. Reddy is a Professor of Engineering at Texas A&M University. They developed this essentially self-contained text from their seminars and courses for students with diverse educational backgrounds. Their effective presentation begins with introductory accounts of the theory of distributions, Sobolev spaces, intermediate spaces and duality, the theory of elliptic equations, and variational boundary value problems. The second half of the text explores the theory of finite element interpolation, finite element methods for elliptic equations, and finite element methods for initial boundary value problems. Detailed proofs of the major theorems appear throughout the text, in addition to numerous examples.

(Designed for those interested in using finite element met...)
Designed for those interested in using finite element methods in the study of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics presents this useful methodology tailored for a limited but significant class of problems dealing with heat conduction, incompressible viscous flows, and convection heat transfer. The authors' approach consists of a series of incremental steps of increasing complexity. The text is divided into 8 chapters. Chapter 1 describes in detail the continuum boundary value problems that form the central focus of the book. Chapters 2 and 3 introduce and extend the finite element method by application to a simplified, two- and three-dimensional heat conduction problems. Chapters 4 and 5 describe isothermal viscous fluid mechanics formulations and the solution of nonlinear equations developed from the flow problem. Chapter 6 covers inelastic non-Newtonian flows and free surface problems. Chapter 7 surveys the complex topic of viscoelastic flow simulation, while Chapter 8 discusses several advanced topics, including turbulence modeling. Each chapter includes example problems ranging from simple benchmarks to practical engineering solutions. In The Finite Element Method in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics, readers will find a pragmatic treatment that views numerical computation as a means to and end and does not dwell on theory or proof. Mastering its contents brings a firm understanding of the basic methodology, the competence to use existing simulation software, and the ability to develop some simpler, special purpose computer codes.

(This is a textbook written for use in a graduate-level co...)
This is a textbook written for use in a graduate-level course for students of mechanics and engineering science. It is designed to cover the essential features of modern variational methods and to demonstrate how a number of basic mathematical concepts can be used to produce a unified theory of variational mechanics. As prerequisite to using this text, we assume that the student is equipped with an introductory course in functional analysis at a level roughly equal to that covered, for example, in Kolmogorov and Fomin (Functional Analysis, Vol. I, Graylock, Rochester, 1957) and possibly a graduate-level course in continuum mechanics. Numerous references to supplementary material are listed throughout the book. We are indebted to Professor Jim Douglas of the University of Chicago, who read an earlier version of the manuscript and whose detailed suggestions were extremely helpful in preparing the final draft. We also gratefully acknowedge that much of our own research work on va ri at i ona 1 theory was supported by the U. S. Ai r Force Offi ce of Scientific Research. We are indebted to Mr. Ming-Goei Sheu for help in proofreading. Finally, we wish to express thanks to Mrs. Marilyn Gude for her excellent and painstaking job of typing the manuscript. This revised edition contains only minor revisions of the first. Some misprints and errors have been corrected, and some sections were deleted, which were felt to be out of date.

(This book presents the theory and computer implementation...)
This book presents the theory and computer implementations of the finite element method as applied to nonlinear problems of heat transfer and similar field problems, fluid mechanics (flows of incompressible fluids), and solid mechanics (elasticity, beams and plates). Both geometric as well as material nonlinearities are considered, and static and transient (i.e.: time-dependent) responses are studied. Although there exist a number of books on nonlinear finite elements that serve as good references for engineers who are familiar with the subject and wish to learn advanced topics or the latest developments, there is currently no book which is suitable as a textbook for a first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. This book fills the void in the market, providing a clear understanding of the concepts of nonlinear finite element analyses through detailed theoretical formulations and computer implementation steps, examples and exercises. In addition, the book serves as a prelude to more advanced books on the subject.
