Jean Donham was born on August 9, 1946 in Iowa City. She is the daughter of Edward Patrick Organ, a truck driver, and Edith (Reilly) Organ.
Jean Donham received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1991 at the University of Iowa. She also got a Master of Library Science from the University of Maryland.
Jean Donham began her career as a secondary school teacher at Ames Community School District. In 1974 she became a librarian in Iowa City Community Schools. Six years later Jean was appointed as a district coordinator of library technology.
From 1993 to 1994 she worked as a visiting assistant professor and from 1994 to 1999 as an assistant professor at the University of Iowa. In 1999 Donham was assigned as an associate professor.
From 2000 to 2003 Jean Donham worked as a College Librarian and Associate Professor and from 2003 to 2008 as a College Librarian and Professor with Tenure. In 2008 Jean was appointed as a College Librarian at Wartburg College and worked there till 2009.
Donham also was a Professor and Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Northern Iowa. In 2014 she retired.

Jean Donham married Kelley Jon Donham on August 10, 1968. Twenty years later they divorced. On July 1, 1989 Jean married her second husband Robert Moon van Deusen and they divorced in October 1997. She has two children from her first marriage: Andrew and Joel.
