Martinson began her education at St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and got Diploma from it in 1957. Then she attended University of Minnesota and received Bachelor of Science degree from it in 1960 and Master of Nonprofit Organizations degree in 1962. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Illinois in Chicago ten years later, as well.
Martinson worked at Ohio University as a nursing scholar in 1986. Next year she was a visiting professor at Foo Yin Junior College of Nursing and Midwifery. She also served as a consultant to Taiwan’s National Defense Medical Center School of Nursing and National Cheng-Kung University. During 1981-1983 Martinson served at Shriners Hospitals as a member of national nursing advisory committee. Simultaneously she worked at Veterans Administration Central Office as a member of geriatrics and gerontology advisory committee during 1981-1985. At the American Bureau for Medical Advancement in China she was a member of nursing committee from 1981 as well.
In the organization Harvey L. Lapides, Jr. Family-Centered Home Care Hospice Program Martinson held the position of a member of board of advisers for 2 years from 1983.
In addition, she was an honorary member of advisory council, board of directors, and executive committee at Children’s Hospice International in 1985, the next year she changed her working position to became a president, working there for 2 years, from 1988 to 1989 she was a co-chairperson, and from that year she served only as a member of that organization.
She was a co-founder of Childhood Cancer Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan in 1986, and served as an advisor from that year.
In the organization named Kaleidoscope she was a member of board of directors from 1995.
Martinson was a member of Active American Cancer Society, Institute of Medicine, American Academy of Nursing, Council Nurse Researchers, American Nurses Association, National Hospice Organization, Professional Nurses Network Association, Foundation of Thanatology, Society of Chinese Bio-scientists in America, Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses, Society of Pediatric Nursing, California Hospice Association, Arizona Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau and Sigma Xi.
Martinson married Paul Varo Martinson on March 31, 1962. The couple have 2 children - Anna Marie and Peter.
