    • With his parents at Mohilev on the Dnieper, Russia, 1886-1893. Came to the United States, 1893.

    Career

    • Went as special correspondent of the New York Times to European countries, 1908, 09, 11, 12. Visited Count Leo Tolstoy in Yasnaya Polyana, and interviewed some of the most prominent persons in Europe. Founder and editor The Day (nat.

      Jewish daily), 1914-1916. Editor-in-chief American Hebrew, 1916-1919. Visited Europe, 1915, to study condition of the Jews in war-stricken countries.

      Went to Russia, 1917, as special correspondent New York Herald, to describe the revolution. Published the “Willy-Nicky” telegrams, the secret correspondence bet. the Kaiser and the Tsar which attracted universal attention. Visited Russia under bolshevist rule, spring, 1918.

      War correspondent of New York Herald in Siberia, with American Expeditionary Forces, and to the Czecho-Slovak front in Ural Mountains. Representative Herald at the Peace Conference, Paris, 1919, and made special investigation of the pogroms in Poland. Envoy Extraordinary anu Minister Plenipotentiary to Albania, February 1930-September 1933.

      While there negotiated naturalization treaty between United States and Albania, signed, January 21, 1931, also negotiated extradition treaty, signed, March 1, 1932. Author: The Flight of Time (poems), 1899. In the Gates of Israel, 1902.

      Contrite Hearts, 1905. With Master Minds (interviews), 1912. The Willy-Nicky Correspondence (with foreword by the late Theodore Roosevelt), 1918.
