    • Elected attorney general of Mississippi, 1911. Reelected, 1915; candidate for government, Democratic primaries, 1919. Member 67th to 73d Congresses (1921-1935) and 75th, 76th and 77th Congresses (1937-1943), 5th Mississippi District Candidate for nomination to the United States Senate, 1934, also for nomination to fill vacancy after death of Senator Pat Harrison, 1941, and for full term following.

      As chairman Military Appropriation, during early 30’s and later, wrote, spoke and fought for mechanized weapons. Credited with bringing into being the Flying Fortress. Honorary member American library association.
