Devised a method of computing the mass ejected by nova stars and developed the theory of radial equilibrium of planetary nebulae. 1934-1946 Professor, and Head, Chair of Astrophysics, Leningrad University. 1939-1953 corrcsp. member, USSR Academy of Science.
1943-1947 V.-President, Armenian Academy of Sciences. 1948-1955 V.-President, International Astronomical Union. Member or honorary member of several foreign acad. of science and learned society.
