Vitaliy ARKHANGELSKY, USSR Ophthalmologist. Professor 1938; Doctor of Medicine Science since 1938; corresponding member, USSR Academy of Medical Science; Head, Chair of Ophthalmology, 1st Sechenov Medicine Institute, Moscow. Order of Lenin.
ARKHANGELSKY, Vitaliy was born in 1897.
1922 graduated Medical Faculty, 1st Moscow University, now 1st Sechenov Medicine Institute. Specialized in ophthalmology at Moscow University Clinic.
1929 introducted blood transfusion into ophthalmological practice. Devised many original operation methods: 1943 hermetic closure of operative incision after opening of anterior eye chamber. 1952 hermetic closure in operations on lacrimal sac.
Developed new operations: 1955 diathermocoagulation of an iris neoplasm. 1957 dithcrmocoagulation of the ciliary body in glaucoma. Honorary member, Kiev Oblast Society of Ophthalmologists.
Editor, journal “Vestnik oftalmologii” (Herald of Ophthalmology). “Meditsinsky referativny zhurnal” (Medical Abstracts Journal). Editor, multivol. manual “Glaznye bolczni” (Eye Diseases).
Deputy Editor, “Oftalmologichesky zhurnal” (Ophthalmology Journal). Co-Editor, “Ophthalmology” section, “Bolshaya meditsinskaya entsiklopediya” (Large Medical Encyclopedia), 2nd edition. Member, Expert Commission, Higher Certifying Committee.
Chra., All-Russia, and board member, AllUnion and Moscow Science Society of Ophthalmologists. Intern, Assistant, then lecturer, above clinic. Since 1938 Head, Chair of Ophthalmology, Kuybyshev Medicine Institute, now Kuybyshev Military Medicine Academy.
During World War П senior ophthalmologist in military hospitals. 1944 Head, Chair of Ophthalmology, Kiev Medicine Institute. Simultaneously senior ophthalmologist, Ukrainia Ministry of Health.
1953 Director, Gelmolts Institute of Ophthalmology, Moscow.
