Ezras ASRATYAN, USSR Physiologist. Professor 1938; corresponding member, USSR Academy of Science, since 1939; full member, Armenian Academy of Sciences, since 1947; Director, Physiological Laboratory, USSR Academy of Science, since 1944; Professor, of Physiology, Pirogov 2nd Moscow Medicine Institute, since 1950. Member, Communist Party, since 1929.

    Career

    • 1950, at joint session of USSR Academy of Science and USSR Academy of Medical Science, held to discuss Pavlov’s physiological teachings, launched a bitter attack against physiologists P. K. Anokhin, I. S. Beritashvili, L. A. Orbeli and others for perverting Pavlov’s doctrine and acknowledging the works of foreign scientists. Co-Editor, “Physiology” section, “Bolshaya meditsinskaya entsiklopediya” (Large Medical Encyclopedia), 2nd edition. Member, Editorial Board, “Zhurnal vysshey nervnoy deyatelnosti im.

      I. P. Pavlova” (Pavlov Journal of Higher Nervous Activity). Со-Editor, other works on physiology. 1956 and 1959 attended 20th and 21st International Congresses of Physiologists in Brussels and Buenos Aires.

      Works deal mainly with development of recovery symptons in injured body, whereby he and his school demonstrate that cerebral cortex plays a decisive role in restoring lost or impaired functions. Developed new principle of sleep treatment for shock, paralysis, brain concussion and other organic disorders. 1942 developed anti-shock liquid, used by Soviet Army in World War II.
