Galileo Violini is an Italian physicist, educator and researcher. Under his direction CIF organized more than 100 events, mostly, but not uniquely, in Colombia. In El Salvador and Iran he has organized workshops, the latter having led to the cooperation agreement between Iran and CERN. Galileo Violini has also become a candidate for Member-at-Large in Italy. Fields of Interest: Particle Physics, Science Policy.

Background

  • Galileo Violini was born in 1942.

  • Career

    • Galileo Violini graduated in Physics at University of Rome La Sapienza in 1965, and obtained the Italian Libera Docenza in theoretical physics from the University of Rome in 1971, where he remained first as a research fellow and then as assistant professor and associate professor (between 1965 and 1987, he was a professor of Algebra and of Mathematical Methods of Physics).

In 1978 he started a collaboration with Colombia, spending some time as a professor of the University of Los Andes in Bogota before becoming an associate professor at the University of Calabria in 1987, where he presently chairs the Institute of Theoretical Physics.

In 1979, Violini first proposed the establishment of the Centro Internacional de Fisica (CIF), an institution focused primarily on the Andean, Central American and Caribbean region, of which he is presently deputy director. Officially founded in 1985, CIF has become well-known in Latin America, organizing more than 150 events with the participation of more than 7,000 scientists, and establishing some research laboratories. Its activities have also been important to the promotion of a stronger connection between the academic and business sectors.

Violini has been director of a four year European Union program at the University of El Salvador, was responsible for higher education UNESCO scientific programs at the Santiago (Chile) Office, and was director of UNESCO Office in Iran.

Under his direction CIF organized more than 100 events, mostly, but not uniquely, in Colombia. He has also organized workshops in El Salvador and Iran, the latter having led to the cooperation agreement between Iran and CERN.

In 2001 he was appointed APS fellow for broad contribution to Physics, the development of new international programs and the promotion of international cooperation between advanced and developing countries.

He has collaborated on several feasibility studies of scientific development programs in Poland, Japan, Colombia, Italy and Chile. In addition he performed a study on Physics in Central America for UNESCO and collaborated on a mission to explore the possibility of international scientific programs in the Middle East which could contribute to the peace in that region.
