Graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School, 1924. Pupil of A. A. Gorskii.
After graduating, danced with the Bolshoi Theatre, 1924-1939. Co-director with L. A. Lashchilin of The Football Player at the Bolshoi Theatre, 1930. Co-director with A. M. Messerer of Vain Precaution at the Experimental Theatre.
Independent productions in 1932, 1935, 1958. Founded the
Choreographic Concert Ensemble of the USSR (later known as the Young Ballet, now the Moscow Classical Ballet). Aimed at unbroken dramatic sequences and realism, using classical and folk-dance techniques.
Founded the Ensemble for Folk-Dancing,
1937. Innovator in folk-dance themes. Lenin Prize, 1967. State Prize of the USSR. 1942, 47, 52.
Honorary member of the Paris Dance Academy, 1955.
