While studying at above institutes, worked as Science Editor, “Agriculture” section, “Bolshaya sovetskaya entsiklopediya” (Large Soviet Encyclopedia). Since 1933 Head, Political Department, Sovkhoz Board for Western Siberia. During World War II worked under Khrushchev as Political Commissar on Ukrainia Front.
1945 promoted to rank of Major-General. 1947-1948 Deputy Head and since 1948 Head,Department of Propaganda and Agitation, Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. 1949 drew criticism for praising book by Voznesensky (who was executed by order of Stalin).
Since 1950 inspector, Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. At 1952 Communist Party of the Soviet Union Congress elected member of the Central Committee. December 1952 appointed Chief Editor, “Pravda”.
Since 1953 Deputy Head,Department of Agriculture, Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Simultaneously instructor in political economics, Institute of Red Professor. 1954-1955 Chief Editor, “Pravda”.
February 1956- July 1957 candidate Presidium Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. July 1955-June 1956 and May 1957- July 1957 Secretary, Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. June 1956- May 1957 USSR Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Deputy, USSR Supreme Soviet of 1950 and 1954 convocation. March 1954-July 1956 Chairman, Commission for Foreign Affairs, Soviet of Nationalities, USSR Supreme Soviet. June 1955-July 1956 Chairman, USSR Parliamentary Group.
1954 member, Communist Party of the Soviet Union delegation German Democratic Republic. 1954 member, Soviet delegation China. 1956 visited Syria, Egypt, the Lebanon and Greece.
1956 USSR representative at United Nations Security Council and in charge of Soviet delegation at Suez Conference, London. 1956 headed Soviet delegation at 11th session, United Nations General Assembly. July 1957 accused of antiParty activities and deprived of position as Secretary, Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Also removed from Central Committee and candidate Presidium membership of Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
