Aleksandr TOPCHIEV, USSR Organic chemist. Professor 1938; full member since 1949, and V.-President since 1958, USSR Academy of Science. Stalin Prize, 1949; two Order of Lenin; other orders; medals. Member, Communist Party, since 1932.

      1960 headed Soviet delegation at 6th Pugwash Conference. Main works deal with catalytic processes of nitration, halogenation, polymerization and alkylation of hydrocarbons. 1932-1938 instructor, Moscow Chemical Technology Institute and Moscow Technology Institute of Food Industry.

      1938-1940 Professor, Technology Institute of Food Industry. 1940-1943 Professor, and 1943-1947 Director, Moscow Petroleum Institute. 1947-1949 USSR Deputy Minister of Higher Education.

      1949-1958 Chief Learned Secretary, Presidium, USSR Academy of Science. 1952-1958 Head,Department of Chemistry and Petroleum Technology and Laboratory of Petroleum and Gas Chemistry, Petroleum Institute, USSR Academy of Science.

    Politics

    Member, Communist Party, since 1932.
