Konstantin VERSHININ, USSR Marshal in Chief of Aviation since 1959. Commander in Chief, USSR Air Force, and USSR Deputy Minister of Defense since 1957; Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, since 1961. Order of Lenin; other high orders; medals; Hero of Soviet Union. Member, Communist Party, since 1919.

    • 1927 graduated military flying school. 1932 graduated Red Army Air Force Academy.

    Career

    • Commanded fighter division in battles of Kiev, Kharkov and Rostov. As Commander, 4th Air Army, directed air operations in Northern Caucasus, Taman, Crimea, Belarusian and East Prussia. At 1952 Communist Party of the Soviet Union Congress elected member of the Central Committee.

      1956 elected member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Lithuania Azerbaydzhan. Voting delegation at 1956 and 1959 Communist Party of the Soviet Union Congresses. Deputy, USSR Supreme Soviet of 1946, 1954 and 1958 convocation.

      Until World War II commanded fighter units. 1940-1941 commanded special combat-training regiment using new fighter types. 1941-1942 commanded fighter division.

      1942-1946 Commander, Black Sea Operational Air Group (s. 1944 4th Air Army); 1946-^49 Commander in Chief, USSR Air Force, and USSR Deputy Minister of Defense. 1949-1957 Commander of Aviation, Baku Antiaircraft Defense District.

      1957, for a short time, Chief, Zhukovsky Air Force Academy.

    Politics

    Member, Communist Party, since 1919.
