Semen VOLFKOVICH, USSR Inorganic chemist. Technologist; Director, Research Institute of Fertilizers, Insecticides and Fungicides, since 1921; full member, USSR Academy of Science, since 1946; Professor, Moscow University, since 1947. Order of Lenin; Order of Red Banner of Labor; Stalin Prize, 1941.
VOLFKOVICH, Semen was born in 1896.
1920 graduated Institute of National Economics.
1922 with Ye. I. Zhukovsky carried out research into electrothermic sublimation of phosphorus from local phosphorites, as a result of which first electrical furnaces for phosphorus sublimation were built in USSR. 1923-1929 in charge of superphosphate production from local phosphorites and apatites. Worked on acid processing of phosphates into concentrated fertilizers and on chemical processing of sylvinite for production of potassium salts.
1945-1950 developed new methods of producing fluoride compounds, potassium and ammonium sulfates and nitrates. Sulfides, phosphides and chlorides. 1929-1932 Professor, Moscow Higher Technology College.
1932-1947 Professor, Military Chemical Academy, later Academy, of Chemical Defense.
