Weightlifter, middle heavyweight class; 1956 and 1960 Melbourne and Rome Olympics Champion; five times World Champion; World Recordholder; USSR Champion; Honoured Master of Sport of USSR. Gold Medal of Melbourne Olympics, 1956; Gold Medal of Rome Olympics, 1960; Order of Lenin, 1957; Badge of Honor; AllUnion Communist Youth League Central Committee’s Scroll of Honor, 1960.

    • Graduated and completed postgrad, course at Sverdlovsk Medicine Institute.

    Career

    • Physician; 1944 Champion of Black Sea Fleet. 1944 set his first All-Union and World record in middle heavyweight class. 1952 competed successfully in Helsinki Olympics.

      1957 placed 1st in World Championship at Teheran. Competed in contests at Paris, Stockholm, Vienna, Munich, New York and Warsaw. 1959 member, Central Council, USSR Union of Sports Society and Organization.

      1959 placed 1st in 2nd Spartakiada of the Popular of the USSR.
