Nikolay Nikolaevich ZHUKOV-VEREZHNIKOV

Nikolay ZHUKOV-VEREZHNIKOV, USSR Immunologist and microbiologist. Professor; Doctor of Medicine Science; full member, USSR Academy of Medical Science, since 1948; Head,Department of Immunology, Institute of Experimental Biology, USSR Academy of Science, since 1955. Stalin Prize, 1950; Order of Red Banner of Labor; medals; Silver Medal of World Peace Council, 1959. Member, Communist Party, since 1943.

    • 1930 graduated Medical Faculty, 2nd Moscow University, now 2nd Moscow Pirogov Medicine Institute.

    Career

    • 1932 developed biological theory of immunity. 1944 experimentally developed formulae for antiplague vaccine which made feasible production of the first live vaccine in USSR. 1945 submitted effective comprehensive method of treating primary pulmonary plague, consisting in use of bacteriostatic and antitoxic preparations to prolong patient’s life until his body can develop active immunity.

      Member, Editor Board, journal “Byulleten eksperimentalnoy biologii i meditsiny” (Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine). Member, Editor Council, “Zhurnal mikrobiologii, epidemiologii i immunologii” (Journal of Microbiology, Epidemiology and Immunology). Since 1952 member, Soviet Committee the Defense of Peace.

      1932-1936 and 1941-1947 senior associate, Research Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology of the South-West, Saratov. 1936-1941 at All-Union Anti-Plague Research Institute, Rostov-on-Don. 1944-1948 associate, 1948-1951 Director, Institute of Experimental Biology, USSR Academy of Medical Science.

      1949-1952 V.-President, USSR Academy of Medical Science. 1952-1954 USSR First Deputy Ministry of Health.
