    Career

    • His Quarterly Journal of Economics paper of 1902, positing a general law of variation of productive forces, is an important contribution to the theory of substitution, then a neglected field despite Marshall’s work on it. He presided over the Harvard University Committee, on Economics Research, which owes its fame to the development of the ‘three curve barometer’ as an indicator of turning points in the business cycle. Instructor Economics, Cornell University, 1895-1899.
